Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone-1-SS-309 pages long Quick Synopsis: Discovered by an ancient Dumbledore associate Nichloas Flamel, The Sorcerer's Stone is a rock that can create the Elixir of Life (or gold). A certain disembodied You-Know-Who desperately covets it. Coolest Magical Object: The Invisibilty Cloak; The Sorting Hat; and the Mirror of Erised. Big Mystery: What is Snape (or as we better know Quirrel) up to? The Return of Voldemort: The true villain is Proffesor Quirrel with Voldemort living on the back of his head.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets-2-COS-341 pages long Quick Synopsis: The Chamber of Secrets is home to the basilisk, a massive snake that kills anyone who looks directly into its eyes and petrifies those who gaze at it indirectly (e.g., through a mirror or camera). Major Introductions: Arthur and Ginny Weasley; Gilderoy Lockheart; Cornelius Fudge; and Lucius Malfoy Coolest Magical Element: Polujuice potion Voldemort Watch: At the beginning of the year Ginny is given a Diary from Lucius Malfoy. The dairy's previous owner was Tom Marvolo Riddle. It turns out that Tom Marvolo Riddle is an anagram for "I Am Lord Voldemort". The book posses Ginny and she is able to open the Chamber of Secrets. Harry uses a basilisk fang and stabs the book. What Harry Learns: Harry learns how much he and Riddle had in common-both were orphans, both from half-muggle parentage, both are Parselmouths-Harry fears he's doomed to the same fate.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban-3-POA-435 pages long Quick Synopsis: Azkaban: a prison, a pretty nasty one, too. The Prisoner of Azkaban: Sirius Black, convicted of murdering 13 people with a curse. He also helped Voldemort kill Harry's parents... or did he? Major Introductions: Wormtail (Peter Petigrew), Moony (Remus Lupin), Padfoot (Sirius Black), and Prongs (James Potter): the Four Marauders; Cho Chang (Harry's future crush) as well as a menagerie of critters. Coolest Magical Object: The boggart wardrobe, the Time-Turner. Voldemort Watch: in the climactic scene in the Shrieking Shack they (Harry, Ron and Hermione) find out that Black was framed by Peter Pettigrew (aka Wormtail) who betrayed Harry's parents and had been hiding out in the form as Ron's pet rat Scabbers. Notable Quote: Dumbledore- "This is magic at its deepest, its most impenetrable, Harry. But trust me... the time may come when you will be very glad you saved Pettigrew's life." What Harry Learns: from Snape Harry learns that his father and friends were cruel pranksters who loved to pick on Severus; from Dumbledore, that it's okay to break the rules for justice; from Lupin, the power to conjure an extremely powerful Patronus (which is a stag).
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire-4-GOF-734 pages long Quick Synopsis: A wooden cup brimming with blue-white flames, the Goblet of Fire is an enchanted instrument that chooses the participants in the Triwizard Tournament. If you put your name in and are chosen, you must compete. The Goblet's cranky that way. Major Introduction: Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, Rita Skeeter, Barty Crouch Sr. (a zealous Ministry official) and Jr. (a Voldemort acolyte), and Winky (the Crouches' greatly abused house elf). Coolest Magical Object: The Pensieve Voldemort: After being transported to a graveyard by the Triwizard cup, Wormtail is waiting and uses some of Harry's blood for a ritual to bring Voldemort back to full power in a human state. They duel and their wands connect giving Harry the spirits of loved one to help him distract Voldemort so he can get back to the Portkey with Cedric's body. Notable Quote: Dumbledore: "Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what's right and what's easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory." What Harry Learns: The varied nature of courage. And cowardice.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix-5-OOTP-870 pages long Quick Synopsis: The Order of the Phoenix was a group of wizards-including Harry's parents-who stood against Voldemort during his first rise to power. Confronted with his return, the surviving members are reunited for the fight. Major Introductions: Thestrals, Grawp, Nymphadora Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Kreacher, Luna "Looney" Lovegood, Dolores Umbridge (that evil witch ) Major Deaths: Sirius Black (Harry's godfather) Coolest Magical Object: The Vanishing Cabinet (rather useful eh?) Voldemort Watch: He's not hiding anymore, he's out openly gathering allies and breaking pals out of Azkaban, He decides to kill Harry Himself and shows up in the Ministry of Magic where he's confronted with the one power he cannot defeat (Dumbeldore, duh!) Notable Quote: Uncle Dursley to Harry: "Hang on. This Lord Voldythingy's back you say... And now he's sending dismembers after you?" What Harry Learns: He tries learning Occlumency from Snape on Dumbledore's request. He also learns that he is protected by his mother's blood, she died to save him.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince-6-HBP-652 pages long Quick Synopsis: The Half-Blood Prince was the nickname Severus Snape gave himself while he was a student at Hogwarts, since his father was a muggle and his mother was a pure-blood witch named Eileen Prince. Major Introductions: In addition to Slughorn, HBP also introduces Horcruxes, objects that can hold part of one's soul. Major Deaths: of course, Albus Dumbledore Coolest Magical Object: Felix Felicis, a vial of liquid luck that Harry uses in two key moments (and pretends to give to Ron before a Quidditch match) Voldemort Watch: Harry learns the full back story of Tom Riddle. Like Harry, Voldemort saw Hogwarts as his true home, but Riddle was a loner and developed a penchant for evil early and began searching for ways to become immortal. What Harry Learns: How his power stacks up to Voldemort's and how they're so intricately connected. Although 2 of You-Know-Who's Horcruxes have been destroyed, there are at least 4 others out there before Harry can have the final showdown with Voldemort to finish what Dumbledore had started.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-7-DH-759 pages long Quick Synopsis: The Deathly Hallows are a trio of mythical death-conquering magical objects-The Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility-coveted by wizards both good and bad. Does Harry have the right stuff to wield them? Horcrux Hunt: Slytherin's locket, stolen and in the hands of Dolores Umbridge; Hufflepuff's Cup, which Harry, Ron, and Hermione manage to steal from her Gringotts vault; Ravenclaw's Diadem, found in the Hogwart's Room of Requirement; Voldemort's snake, Nagini; and Harry himself. Most Surprising Hero: The house elf Dobby who loses his life while saving Harry and the other good guys from Malfoy Manor. Harry digs a grave for him (using no magic) at Bill and Fluer's new place. Dumbledore, We Hardly Knew You: Harry learns that Dumbledore had been friends with a muggle hating wizard in the past named Gellert Grindelwald; both amazed by the legend of the Deathly Hallows. He finds the ring, puts it on, and doomed himself to death even if Snape hadn't killed him. The Climax: It seems that Snape was really following Dumbledore's orders. As Death Eaters storm Hogwarts, Harry realizes that he must die by the Dark Lord's hand in order to stop him once and for all. Voldemort kills him with the Avada Kedavra curse. Harry is sent to King's Cross station and talks to Dumbledore about what he didn't understand. He comes back to life to see Neville kill Nagini with Godric Gryffindor's sword. In the final showdown Harry gives Voldemort one last chance to save himself by showing remorse. No dice. The two exchange curses. Due to the Elder Wand and in its own complicated way, You-Know-Who's spell back fires and... Ding Dong, the wicked wizard is dead. Nineteen Years Later: In an epilogue, we learn that Ron and Hermione got married, with two kids: Hugo and Rose; Harry and Ginny are married with three kids: James, Lily, and Albus Severus. As the kids board the Hogwarts Express we learn: "The scar has not pained Harry for 19 years. all was well."
Talk About 'Deathly Hallows': A Tribute In the bloody Battle of Hogwarts and the dark days preceding it, countless Muggles lost their lives- and at least 71 members of the magic world. Some will never see the right side of the Resurrection Stone, while others we sorely miss. A Silencing Charm for some of the fallen.
Vincent Crabbe Colin Creevey Dobby Hedwig Bellatrix Lestrange Remus Lupin Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody Peter Pettigrew Tom "Voldemort" Riddle Severus Snape Nymphadora Tonks Fred Weasley
